Brass Horns

Brass horns are generally defined by the method by which they produce sound; vibrating the lips against a resonator (mouthpiece). The primary material used in their manufacturing is brass; however, there are woodwind instruments that are also made from brass, like the saxophone for example. Trumpets, trombones and tuba’s are all popular brass instruments.

Brass horns use either a series of valves, or a slide as the primary means of changing pitch. These devices must be used in coordination with changes in the speed of lip vibration in order to be effective. It often takes years of practice to be able to combine these two elements seamlessly.

Brass horns are also uni-directional producers of sound; meaning that all of the sound comes from one specific area of the instrument, the bell. This is different than woodwinds, from which sound comes from all areas of the horn. This aspect of brass instruments gives them a very direct, often piercing tone.
