Trumpet Intruments

The earliest trumpet instruments were simple in design. Essentially, they were made from a single tube that was bent in some fashion, and gradually flared out into a bell. Because there were no valves, a different sized instrument was required for each key.

The smallest of modern trumpet instruments is called the piccolo trumpet. The length of tubing on these instruments is roughly half the length of the standard Bb trumpet. This results in a much higher and brighter pitch than their larger cousins.

One of the most unusual of trumpet instruments is the slide trumpet. This version uses a slide rather than valves, much like a trombone only smaller. These instruments first appeared during the Renaissance and were the first attempt at allowing the trumpet to be played chromatically.
