Trumpets
Trumpets are among the oldest of wind instruments. The earliest examples can be traced back to the second and third millennium BC. Trumpets from this time period, and continuing into the Renaissance era, were primarily used for military purposes.
During the Renaissance, the trumpet slowly evolved into a “musical” instrument. However, since valves weren’t introduced until later, these trumpets required that the musician to swap out parts of the instrument in order to change keys. These instruments were used extensively throughout the Baroque era.
Around the mid-19th century valves were introduced into the design of trumpets. These valves allowed the trumpeter to finally be able to play chromatically, eliminating the need to constantly change tubing with every key change. This invention signaled the birth of the modern trumpet.
