Trumpet FAQs

How does lacquer and plating affect the sound of the trumpet?

Any protective lacquer or plating will tend to “deaden” the sound a bit, when compared to raw brass. However, since plating creates a considerably thinner covering, it tends to have less effect of the resonance of the instrument.

How old is the trumpet, historically speaking?

Evidence of simple trumpet-like instruments has been found dating back to the second century B.C. However, what we recognize as the modern trumpet first appeared in the 19th century.

What is the best kind of trumpet mouthpiece?

It depends on the style of playing. Lead players often prefer a shallow cup, which allows them to play higher notes. However, many soloists prefer a deeper cup, which allows more flexibility.
